University at Albany research links adult opioid use and suicide risk

A team of researchers at the University at Albany utilized regression analyses to examine the relationship between non-prescription opioid use and suicidal thoughts. By separating according to age group, they were able to determine that the risk of suicide is most concerning in older adults. Those who reported opioid use in the 12 month prior were 71 percent more likely to have suicidal thoughts and more than twice as likely to have attempted suicide. The researchers suggest that physicians conduct more thorough mental health screenings before prescribing their patients opioids.
