Position Title: Chief Information Security Officer
Title of Immediate Supervisor: President & Chief Executive Officer
Summary:
The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is a newly created executive position within NYSERNet responsible for establishing and maintaining the enterprise vision, strategy, and program to ensure information assets and technologies are adequately protected for members and NYSERNet reporting to the President/CEO. The security strategy would include technology controls, processes and training to mitigate vulnerabilities and risks. The CISO identifies and helps bring to production cybersecurity products and services for NYSERNet members addressing common network, research and security challenges with targeted solutions and services for members of all sizes.
This CISO will collaborate with NYSERNet team and members to ensure viability and availability of services. This includes working closely with the Chief Technology Officer and Chief Network Architect in identifying key technologies, the Chief Membership Officer for membership alignment, Director of Education Services and the Chief Financial Officer for financial viability and ROI and with Operations and Support.
This senior level executive needs 7+ years of Information Technology (IT) and Information Security expertise and experience preferably in educational and/or nonprofit markets. Must have 5+ year proven track record of successfully leading technical individuals and leaders in operations and support.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop cybersecurity strategies reflecting member needs with effective return on investment meeting financial goals
- Identify product/service needs and requirements relative to cybersecurity for NYSERNet to provide
- Stay current of and advise on security industry requirements, frameworks, compliance needs, products, and services
- Collaborate with information security industry partners
- Serve as CISO for NYSERNet
- Establish and direct appropriate security standards and controls for NYSERNet
Professional Experience & Knowledge:
Required
• 7+ years IT and cyber security experience
• 5+ years IT management experience
• 5+ years budget management experience
• 3+ years information security incident experience
Preferred
• Security certifications
• Data management experience
• Information Technology certifications
• Research computing experience
• Higher Education / Education experience
• Senior leadership experience
• Product development experience
• Cyber insurance policy knowledge
• State and Federal grant knowledge
Working Environment:
Primarily a Microsoft desktop environment, including Office 365, Windows 10, Word, Excel and Outlook.
NYSERNet staff operate in a hybrid work environment and offer flexible work arrangements. The NYSERNet main administrative office is in Syracuse, New York. Relocation is not a requirement; however, proximity to New York is required for agile travel to meetings throughout the state and at the NYSERNet office.
