Unlike many Advanced Research Networks, NYSERNet does not offer commercial Internet service via its backbone network, focusing instead on advancing the research and education capabilities of the network.
However, in order to help our members meet this need, NYSERNet participates in a national commercial Internet service buying club operated by The Quilt, a consortium of regional network providers, like NYSERNet, that work together to deliver low-cost, high-performance network services to the research and education community.
Every two years, the Quilt seeks vendors willing to offer discounts based on the aggregate Quilt bandwidth purchase (now approaching 400 Gb), and are willing to advance the technologies deployed in their networks. The Quilt is keenly interested in promoting support for Ethernet, IPv6, jumbo frames, and multicast in the commercial Internet.
The Quilt negotiates pricing and terms and passes on the savings to NYSERNet and its members. The vendors selected in the 2014 cycle are CenturyLink, Cogent Communications, Level 3, TeliaSonera, TW Telecom, and Zayo Group.
