RPI and Cornell developing farming techniques for cities

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University received a three-year $2.42 million grant last year to collaborate on fostering production of food in cities. The team has been researching sustainable greenhouses and plant factories, particularly LED lighting and its effect on water use and nutrient content. Their findings on controlled environment agriculture have great potential for altering urban farming techniques, resulting in less transportation and water usage, and an increase in jobs.

The scientists are able to share ideas and data using NYSERNet’s R&E network.
