NYSERNet Projects - Current Projects

  • Broadband Policy Group (BPG):
  • In 1997, BPG began as the Broadband Pricing Group, an informal consortium whose goal was bringing the cost of commodity networking down. But it quickly became clear that there were two parallel but distinct goals: reducing pricing and understanding where networking was heading and the policy issues that would influence it. The Quilt was organized around the former task, with BPG reconstituted as the Broadband Policy Group under the auspices of EDUCAUSE. Tim Lance’s paper looking over the horizon, endorsed by the EDUCAUSE Board, became the framework for BPG’s subsequent work. BPG has been an invited participant in discussions in Congress and with the FCC on the reopening of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
